HJC Helmets: What To Look For In A New Helmet

By Ryan L. Warren

If a person is picking out HJC helmets there are many things that they should consider. Choosing the wrong type of protection can render it ineffective and make the rider much more vulnerable to injury. Riders should know what to look for when buying a new helmet so that they are best protected.

Some riders claim that it is actually safer to go without a helmet, as they say it can impair vision and increase the chances of accidents. However, this claim has been soundly refuted by study after study that shows wearing a helmet decreases deaths and serious injuries from accidents. Even if it is uncomfortable, it is still smart to wear a helmet.

Before buying any helmet the rider should be certain that it carries the seal of approval from the Department of Transportation. The DOT sticker can be found on the back of the helmet and guarantees that the device has been tested and met all safety requirements. Helmets that do not have this sticker have not been proven to work in an accident and should be avoided.

Another important feature of any helmet is retention, which means that it will stay on the head no matter what. A good way to test this is to strap on the device and then try and lift it off of the head. The rider should never be able to get the helmet off of their head, even with a lot of pain and struggle.

The fit is also vitally important. Not only does it help with retention but the helmet is much more likely to work properly if it is well fitted to the head of the rider. Many people who work at motorcycle stores are trained in how to fit a helmet, so smart riders will ask for some assistance to be sure it fits well.

Coverage is another important thing to consider. This means that the helmet is covering all of the most exposed parts of the head and face. There should be some kind of mask that will protect the eyes and a face guard which protects the mouth and jaw.

When choosing HJC helmets it is important to remember all of the different features a protective device should have. Picking out the color and look are not the most important decision a rider will make. By doing some research and talking to a professional, riders should be able to protect themselves effectively.
