I have never known a proponent of First Amendment Rights who was a blast at parties. As someone from a younger generation, I find myself surrounded by surly gun owners who only want to complain about politics while the stock up on ammunition. While I understand that guns and politics are helplessly entwined, it doesn't change the fact that I don't want to be involved in those conversations all the time. Gun owners are just not that cool, which is why I am shocked to announce that they are wearing trendy gun tees now.
There is a bi-annual event that I really enjoy attending in Kentucky called a "Machine gun shoot." It's a place where gun enthusiasts get together, buy and trade munitions, and shoot powerful automatic guns into a really awesome shooting range filled with explosives. Last year's event was awesome, as always, but I noticed that there were a small section of the attendees wearing these shirts the like of which I've never seen before.
None of the vendors had pro-gun clothing for sale, as far as I could tell. I saw one guy wearing one and being asked by a vendor where he had gotten it. The vendors, in general, seemed pretty astounded by how cool these shirts were themselves. Do you know who was wearing them? A whole younger generation of gun enthusiasts, many of whom looked like returned war vets.
Since I go every year, I made a mental note to take notice if there were lots more people wearing the pro-gun gear I had seen from the previous year. Sure enough, lots of the stall runners had those shirt in stock. In addition to that, all of the younger people from the year before were still wearing cool clothes and lots of those older guys were wearing them now too.
This new wave of awesome shirts have pervaded the entire culture of gun enthusiasts. It turns out that you don't have to look like an insane gun collector to actually be one, which is relieving. I like the fact that the option is available to me to show off my pride in my first amendment rights and look good doing it. Guess who has a big collection of cool gun apparel now?
