Contemporary Sportswear

By Morgan Leeks

Sportswear is becoming fashionable. Many companies are giving their employees customized sportswear as a benefit of the job. Often, at charity events, people wear clothing, including shirts and hats, with the logo on it. Customized sportswear is becoming more popular. Workers match while also sporting the company logo.

The History of Sportswear

People have worn knitted clothing ever since the ancient times. They liked the stretchiness that knitted clothing allowed them. Jersey was developed around 1882. By 1900, it was used in riding clothing. Rubber fibres were then added to socks and undergarments in the thirties.

Sportswear after the war

After the war, synthetic fibres were being invented. In the beginning stages, they were used for dresses, underwear, and tops to wear while exercising. However, in the middle of the sixties, stretch outfits were becoming more popular. People began to see how comfortable they were and loved that they were able to move so easily in them.

During the fifties, sportswear continued to change. Nylon was invented and mixed with synthetic fibres. Also, people tried new things with their fashion. Pockets were introduced to jackets and gloves. Hoods were placed on jackets and shirts. Elastic was commonly used for trousers. They made it easier to get dressed in the morning. Stirrup feet became a new fad. All of these things we take for granted, were invented during the fifties.

The look of athletes changed during this time. They had started using nylon with their shorts and vets. They also used windbreaker jackets to help deal with the wind. However, even with all of the new inventions, they continued to exercise in normal trousers. In the sixties, sweat suits and track suits became popular. They were usually worn in navy, green, or grey. This probably inspired the crazy colors that became quite popular during the eighties.

Tennis whites also continued to change. As long as it was white and respectable, women were given a little freedom in what they wore. They often wore shirts, shorts, and even dresses that had a little more style.

Riding sports

The fashion also changed for people who rode bikes, motorcycles, and scooters. They started wearing jeans and stretch trousers for riding. Capri trousers became popular at this time. Women often used the stirrup feet to keep their trousers down.

Motorcyclists worked to find clothing to help with the wind. They often wore leather jackets. People who rode Vespa scooters often wore leather jackets with their jeans or stretch trousers. However, they also liked to try suede. In the late fifties, they often wore a roll polo neck or cowl jumper.

With all of the changes in fashion, horseback riders managed to stay the same. They continued to wear the same riding jackets, trousers, and hats. Some women even continued to ride in skirts.

Sportswear became more functional in the fifties. These clothes became important. People noticed them and started wearing them while doing normal things. Anoraks and parkas with hoods became popular in the early sixties. However, this was not recorded.
