Owners' Tips For Buying Horse Saddles For All Kinds Of Riding

By Kristina D. Dennise

As all horse owners know, using the right horse saddles and other tack is very important. However, there are so many choices available, that owners may be overwhelmed by all of the options. Measuring precisely is the primary thing to do when purchasing horse tack, but other things should be done as well. The design work and such on the tack is just as important as deciding between Western saddles and English ones.

The most important thing buyers need to do when purchasing horse saddles is to measure carefully. There are various suggestions on ways to get the best fit, but for remote ordering, making a template of the horse's withers is important. To do this simply use a wire that is around 18 inches long and form it over the back of the horse behind the base of the withers about 2.5 inches back. A close fit that is not too far toward the base of the withers is important to get the best fitting saddle. When removed, the buyer can trace the outline onto a paper and send it to the saddle shop or email it.

Another consideration when purchasing horse saddles and tack is whether the horse is ridden with Western or English saddles. Still, horse tack buying, no matter for what style of event, may also require owners to measure other things to make sure everything fits correctly. One way that owners often save time in measuring and buying a replacement saddle is to measure their current one. Sometimes saddles have tags that display the model number of the saddle and the manufacturer. Still, even if an owner gets the measurements off of the old saddle, it's important to remember that horses' bodies change with time just like people's do, so measuring is the only way to ensure the fit will be right.

Owners should keep in mind too that various types of saddles are used for different types of riding, and a saddle made for one type may not fit as well for a different style of riding. The event or riding style should be a primary concern when choosing horse saddles and tack so that the equipment matches the type of riding that will be done. This is not to say that some horses don't alternate between different styles and events, but when buying a saddle, riders should be sure to have a riding style or event in mind.

When measuring horse saddles and looking for horse tack for sale, keeping these guidelines in mind will make the shopping go a lot easier. The best tack is easy to find by researching what's available and measuring the horse with precision.
