Sunscreen Can Make Or Break Your Vacation

By Kyle Piraino

Ever tried not using sunscreen after a winter full of snow and clouds? I have tempted fate in that area, and failed miserably while doing so. It was one of the worst decisions of my life to decide not to use sunscreen while at a Caribbean Island during the winter. What happened was the worst burn of my young life that I will never forget.

My first decision was to not wear sunscreen, so that I could get some sun and get a decent base tan. Not in my wildest dreams (or nightmares) would I expect to get as burned as I did in that short of a time period. Within the first 12 hours, I was burned the worst I have ever been in my whole life. Unmovable burn to the point where you do not really enjoy living.

It was truly a learning experience. I was too young to understand what the possibilities were when dealing with the sun. I know now that sunscreen should be applied whenever you are venturing into the sun for the first time after a long winter. Even worse, if you go to basically South America, do not underestimate how bad you need to cover up.

One of the lesser known facts about sunscreen is that you have to keep it on your skin. You can't just rub it into the skin and expect it to be protected. You have to keep a physical barrier between your skin and the sun in order for it to work. This is important and can be overlooked which can cause you to be confused as to why your skin is still burning when sunscreen is applied.

All of these things are essential when on vacation. Knowing them is half the battle, but doing them before the sun hurts you is just as important. I always thought I could beat the sun without sunscreen, and I paid a pretty hefty price and will not be making that same mistake again.
